Backing Up Google Drive Files

Google Drive can store many things: documents, pictures, videos, and almost any other type of file you may have. Items are wonderfully stored in Google Drive as living sites and pages, live on the web. But these files of yours are in the cloud, at the mercy of a working internet connection and, of course, Google. Many of us do not want to be completely dependent upon the internet or Google when accessing our information.

  • When the internet goes down, would you have access to all the items you have stored in Drive? If you have downloaded the Drive app, then your files sync offline, and you can get to them without connectivity. If you haven't downloaded the app, and there are many reasons why you might not have, then you are stuck waiting for the net to come back up.
  • If you move to a different district, how will you access everything stored under your seminole.k12.tx.us domain name? School policy allows you a few months of access, and you can always transfer ownership of your Drive files to another account, but it is something you need to consider as your Drive library grows.

Be aware that you can get your Drive files in many different ways, this is just one. To download your files for offline storage:

The advice I usually give is not to worry. If something happens to take down Google, we will have WAY bigger problems to worry about, and I'll have to take back all the fun I make of doomsday preppers. Storing your files on a flash drive is just as vulnerable and unpredictable as storing them in Drive, without the benefits of cloud based computing. Weigh your own pros and cons and stay educated on the best methods for curating your resources.
